1983 Walker Cup

The prestigious team event was last held at Hoylake in 1983 when the USA side, led by captain Jay Sigel, overcame Charlie Green’s GB&I team with a 13 ½ - 10 ½ victory.

No American has played in more Walker Cups than Sigel. His nine appearances ranks only behind the all-time record held by Great Britain and Ireland’s Joe Carr. His USA Teams were 8-1 (with the only loss in 1989) and he produced an overall record of 18-10-5.

Sigel who also captained the team in 1985, had one of the more decorated USGA careers, winning five national championships, including the U.S. Amateur and U.S. Mid-Amateur in the same year (1983).
