'Hoylake plays host to a variety of prestigious amateur events'
The Hoylake Open Scratch Mixed Foursomes, or HOSMF for short (well, sort of short), has long given top amateur male and female golfers the chance to play together in a high-profile pairs event.
The most prestigious event of its type in the United Kingdom
Staged over the late summer bank holiday at the end of August, the links always provide a stern but fair test for low handicap players, and HOSMF is regarded as the most prestigious event of its type in the UK and possibly Europe. It attracts competitors from across the UK and overseas, and many players return year after year, possibly because the event finds time for entertaining as well as competitive activities. The event has welcomed many luminaries of the amateur game down the years and counts Gary Wolstenhome (six-time Walker Cup player and two-time winner of Amateur Championship) and Elaine Ratcliffe (Curtis Cup), and Malcom Lewis (England Captain, Walker Cup, Low Amateur British Open) and Claire Waite (Curtis Cup) amongst its past winning pairs.
Created by Hoylake members Gus Lowe and Joy Christian-Jones, the three day knock-out event that comes complete with a full social programme has always demanded stamina both on and off the course.
Catriona Matthew played in the HOSMF several times and recalled fondly that she always enjoyed this “good social event”.
Competitors can make accommodation arrangements here.
The Harold Hilton Medal was inaugurated in 1997 to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of Hoylake legend Harold Hilton's Open Championship home victory.
Entry is open to gentlemen amateur golfers of 30 years of age and over. The handicap is limited to 5, plus invited guests. The field will be limited to 60 players
Prizes will be awarded to the winner and runner up in each flight, the leading qualifier and the winner of the Scratch Stableford. The overall winner will receive the Harold Hilton Medal which will remain the property of and in the possession of Royal Liverpool Golf Club.
The event is inclusive of Practice Round, Captain's Welcoming Reception and Supper, Lunches and the Championship Dinner.
The Wirral Golf Classic presents a fantastic opportunity to play an Open Championship course and three other fine links courses at a very attractive price
Players come from all over the UK and some from continental Europe to experience this unique event. In addition to the pull of playing at Hoylake, there are three other fine courses to enjoy. Wallasey is a former Open Qualifying venue enjoying beautiful views across the Mersey to Liverpool and offers fine links golf. It is also the birthplace of Stableford, created by one of their past Captains. The R&A chose Heswall a few miles further along the coast from Hoylake, as their venue for the Junior Open Championship in 2006. Caldy, has fine views from its cliffs across the River Dee to Wales and is a former venue of the Seniors’ Championship and was the Final Qualifier venue for the Ladies' Ricoh championship. All great courses with wonderful views and challenging holes.
Included in the entrance fee are 2 social events, a Welcome Reception as well as the Prize-giving at Royal Liverpool. With green fees alone almost double this fee the event offers excellent value.
